When to apply for asylum?

You must apply for asylum if you want to stay in the UK as a refugee. You must meet the requirements. To prove that you meet the requirements require you must show that your are unable or unwilling to go back to your country of origin because you fear persecution

If your are an asylum seeker arriving in the UK, you must apply when you arrive in the UK, preferably at the port of entry or as soon as you think it would be unsafe for you to return to your own country. Your application is more likely to be denied if you wait for long without justification.

Asylum Procedure

This is a two steps process.

  1. After you apply seat a screening interview. At this stage you will answer a number of questions to the Immigration Officer who will amongst other things ask you about your identity, your country and the reason you want to claim asylum.
  2. The substantive interview will be followed by a interview with a caseworker. The caseworker will ask many questions about you, your country, why you are claiming asylum, any evidence you have to support your claim, etc.

The Home Office usually give a decision on your application within 6 months.

Reporting

What to do next? Report regularly to an Immigration Officer as required. You may be detained any time if your asylum is not granted. If your situation change, you must tell the authorities if your situation changes.
